Malt U 2018
The inaugural year of Malt U was a great success. Co-presented by BSG and Rahr Malting Co., Malt U consisted of a day-long symposium of malt education hosted at Surly Brewing Co. followed by a morning of tours at Rahr’s Shakopee campus, including Rahr’s malthouses, Koda Energy, the Rahr Technical Center & Brewery, and BSG’s Minnesota distribution center.
Malt is who we are
At BSG, we get used to having malt all around us; stacked in one of our many warehouses across the US, samples in our offices, put to use at the breweries we visit, and sold through homebrew shops to the professional brewers of tomorrow.
Clear Choice Malt
Craft beer drinkers throughout the U.S. could soon be seeing the results of innovation in malt. “Clear Choice Malt” produced by Crisp Maltings reduces haze in cask and bottled beer. It is aimed at craft brewers who are looking to perfect their quality at the same time as lowering energy costs – and increasing brewing capacity!

Rye for American Whiskies
Rye whiskey has deep roots in the United States, with a history that dates back to the colonial days. A combination of changing tastes and Prohibition almost killed it off, but it’s enjoying a bit of a renaissance as more new distillers and craft spirit enthusiasts rediscover its charms. Here’s a quick primer on different […]
Mashing: cereal vs. malt
The first step in producing spirit from cereal grains is mashing. Style, equipment and tradition may influence the choice of process, but the raw materials themselves will be the biggest factor. The distiller must make the right decision based on the ingredients.
Selecting Malt for a Whiskey Mashbill
Malt can constitute anywhere from approximately 10% to 100% of a whiskey mashbill. Its role can be simply a natural source of enzymes with which to convert starches, a source of extract in its own right, and a cornerstone of the sensory profile of the finished product, lending flavors of honey, biscuit, grain, earthiness, and […]
