Malt Friability Analysis

Malt friability is measured by crushing in a friabilimeter. This specialized instrument is designed to retain hard bits of endosperm using a screen; the percentage of solids passing through the screen is expressed as a percentage and designated as % friable.

Malt friability increases with modification and can be used along with other indices of modification to adjust brewhouse processes, such as milling, mashing, and wort collection, that may be influenced by the degree of malt modification.
