IBU Analysis
The International Bitterness Unit (IBU) is used to quantify hop bitterness in beer. Beer IBU levels can be determined using either UV spectrophotometry or HPLC. This analysis uses the UV spectrophotometric method to measure the absorption of 275 nm UV light by hop bittering compounds, providing the best correlation with sensory bitterness.

IBU testing has a wide range of practical application including routine beer analysis, determining hop utilization in your brewhouse based on how you hop, process control and optimization, fine tuning hopping schedules, and checking any marketing claims against analytical data.
