BSG & Rahr Malting Co. Proud to Support Resilience IPA & Camp Fire Relief

We were in Germany as the details of the magnitude of the Camp Fire continued to come in. Ian [Ward, President of BSG] and I were together and I remember him grabbing his phone to text Ken Grossman at Sierra to ask how we can help.  Ken called back shortly after and we immediately decided to free up as much malt as it would take to support their Resilience IPA concept.  I think having been directly impacted by the Napa/Sonoma fires the year prior made it hit home particularly hard.

Resilience Butte County Proud IPA was conceived by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. as a fundraiser for the Camp Fire Relief Fund. Sierra Nevada asked their colleagues in the craft brewing industry to join them in brewing the recipe, distributing the beer, and donating the proceeds to the efforts to rebuild after the most destructive wildfire in California history.

Roughly 1,500 breweries answered that call. Collectively, our industry brewed 17,000 barrels of Resilience IPA using ingredients donated by suppliers, including Rahr Malting Co. and Brewers Supply Group.

Rahr Malting Co. sent a 210,000 lb railcar of malt directly to Sierra Nevada’s Chico, CA brewery, while over 560 other breweries received Rahr malt via BSG for approximately 5900 barrels of Resilience IPA brewed around the country. BSG supplied Chinook, Centennial, and Cascade hops called for in the recipe to 60 breweries for more than 500 barrels of IPA.

Sierra Nevada’s Resilience Butte County Proud IPA was released in late December 2018; releases from other participating breweries are ongoing, so craft beer drinkers still have a chance to enjoy this historic beer while helping a very good cause.
