    Recap: Brewing with Witch Hunt
    Recap: Brewing with Witch Hunt

Centuries ago, women brewsters would don their long, pointed hats, hang their broomsticks above their door to signal business was open, and get to work brewing in their large cauldrons. The visual should conjure up the image of a classic witch, complete with a cat to case away mice and vermin from the brewing ingredients. While modern brewsters have ditched the broomsticks and cauldrons, the term “witch” carries on to become a positive affirmation with the organization Witch Hunt in Minneapolis.

BSG & Rahr Malting Co. Proud to Support Resilience IPA & Camp Fire Relief
BSG & Rahr Malting Co. Proud to Support Resilience IPA & Camp Fire Relief

Resilience Butte County Proud IPA was conceived by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. as a fundraiser for the Camp Fire Relief Fund. Sierra Nevada asked their colleagues in the craft brewing industry to join them in brewing the recipe, distributing the beer, and donating the proceeds to the efforts to rebuild after the most destructive wildfire in California history.

“We were in Germany as the details of the magnitude of the Camp Fire continued to come in. Ian [Ward, President of BSG] and I were together and I remember him grabbing his phone to text Ken Grossman at Sierra to ask how we can help. Ken called back shortly after and we immediately decided to free up as much malt as it would take to support their Resilience IPA concept. I think having been directly impacted by the Napa/Sonoma fires the year prior made it hit home particularly hard.” - Marc Worona, BSG’s Vice President of Sales

The symposium dove into the real and imagined potential of these varieties, as well as their scientific challenges, sensory characteristics, success stories, and tips and tricks; all in the context of modern brew houses and malt. Over 100 attendees from assorted countries were there representing different areas of barley breeding, farming, malting, distribution, sales, and breweries. Speakers from these diverse areas of the industry covered those topics with in-depth presentations about heirloom and terroir barley varieties.

In the Mix: Ideal Hops for Milkshake IPAs

Trends in craft brewing are in constant flux, and the latest in creative IPA styles is an excellent example of the variety of options brewers have with their craft. Milkshake IPAs seek to mimic the familiar aspects of their namesakes, and brewers use additions such as lactose and increased fruity hops to achieve the Milkshake IPAs signature hazy appearance, smooth mouthfeel, and distinctive sweetness.

This year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF) took off in Denver, Co, and BSG joined the other 62,000 attendees in the festivities. BSG had a booth at the event, and offered up a hop and malt sensory experience for those attending, in which seven malts and five varieties of brewer’s cuts were available for a “rub & sniff” evaluation. Of these, the new Idaho Gem hops were available to test out.
