With harvest beginning in about a month, we’re looking back at a growing season that has been fairly unique in weather patterns throughout the Northwest hop growing region.

New Year, New Hop: Introducing Idaho Gem™

There’s no better way to start out the new year than with the exciting additions of brand new hops! Named after the mountainous state it was first grown in, Idaho Gem™ is the latest variety to come out of Gooding Farms in Idaho, USA.

Trends in craft brewing are in constant flux, and the latest in creative IPA styles is an excellent example of the variety of options brewers have with their craft. Milkshake IPAs seek to mimic the familiar aspects of their namesakes, and brewers use additions such as lactose and increased fruity hops to achieve the Milkshake IPAs signature hazy appearance, smooth mouthfeel, and distinctive sweetness.

If you’ve been hunting for a delicate, fruity hop with an amazingly smooth mouthfeel, look no further than Cashmere. Cashmere hops were released in 2013 through Washington State University’s hop-breeding program. Daughter of female Cascade and male Norther Brewer, Cashmere is a public variety hop that can be grown in your own garden.

The Rahr Technical Center Brewery has been busy brewing for the past several months, and you can have a chance to sample the results at the 2018 Craft Brewers Conference in Nashville. The RTC beers encompass a wide range of styles highlighting the flavors and aromas of some of the ingredients available from BSG’s suppliers.

Idaho 7 burst onto the scene in 2015 with a sensory profile that reminded some of Mosaic in its multifaceted character. By turns it seems to show pine, tropical fruit, citrus, and tea leaf. You may have first tasted it in Sierra Nevada’s single hop series, but it’s becoming much more commonly seen in flights and pints all over the country.

When it comes to hops, there’s no substitute for quality. For many craft brewers, who are typically using smaller lots of a wide range of hop varieties, understanding the pelletization process and importance of pellet density can help ensure optimal results.
